One summer night, Dr Everest of Tunbridge Wells is called to a house near his practice to tend to the dying Colonel Manningtree. But what he believes to be a routine case takes a turn for the sinister when the Colonel's daughter, Dora, visits him the following morning with a strange story. Claiming to have been disturbed by odd noises during the night, Dora is adamant that she heard her father's voice call out to her - and when she went to the room where his body lay, the face beneath the shroud was not that of Colonel Manningtree.
Is Dora insane? Is the house haunted? Or is there a more sinister human agency at work?
A macabre Victorian mystery from the pen of Thomas Cobb, author of The Disappearance of Mr Derwent - also available in Black Heath Classic Crime.
The House by the Common Black Heath Classic Crime eBook Thomas Cobb
A simpler than average late Victorian mystery. Well enough written but you're not that likely to be much surprised by any of the developments. Interestingly, the narrator consistently underestimates the heroine and serves as a bit of a model of Victorian condescending attitudes towards women. If you read the book and you wonder what the Pantiles are, it's a shopping area in Tunbridge Wells with rather grand buildings with columns; it's still there and you can see images if you Google it.Product details

The House by the Common Black Heath Classic Crime eBook Thomas Cobb Reviews
Quick read, things might have been obvious, but still thought well of the book and author.
Very interesting story
Author beginning to get better at dialog and story line. Has good ideas, but needs to learn a lot. All his books need better editing.
The mystery was obvious from the start. The narrator was irritatingly condescending and complacent. The only mild interest was in the glimpses of medical practice and funeral customs of the time.
