A technology that will change what it means to be human...A discovery that questions the very laws of physics......and a catastrophe that cannot be stopped.
Deep in the Caribbean Sea, a nuclear submarine is forced to suddenly abort its mission under mysterious circumstances. Strange facts begin to emerge that lead naval investigator, John Clay, to a small group of marine biologists who are quietly on the verge of making history.
With the help of a powerful computer system, Alison Shaw and her team are preparing to translate the first two-way conversation with the planet's second smartest species. But the team discovers much more from their dolphins than they ever expected when a secret object is revealed on the ocean floor. One that was never supposed to be found.
Alison was sure she would never trust the military again. However, when an unknown group immediately becomes interested in her work, Alison realizes John Clay may be the only person she can trust. Together they must piece together a dangerous puzzle, and the most frightening piece, is the trembling in Antarctica.
To make matters worse, someone from the inside is trying to stop them. Now time is running out...and our understanding of the world is about to change forever.

I am 72 years old and I have been reading science fiction since I discovered the genre 68 years ago. I remember well the first book I read, which was "Woman of the Dunes," by Kobo Abe. That book forever changed the way I looked at sand. Most of the current SciFi, seems ridiculous and does not expand the mind. This new voice brings back food for thought and it is well written. Thank you, Michael Crumley.Product details

Breakthrough (Audible Audio Edition) Michael C Grumley Meghan Wolf Books Reviews
The book has an interesting premise and a few promising subplots. However, the book is plagued with bad writing, forgettable characters, implausible situations, and plot holes large enough to prompt this reader to say "That's not how any of this works." For example, underlings who can walk in, unscheduled, to an Admiral's office, when Admiral's time is scheduled in five-minute increments and appointments often have to be scheduled weeks and months ahead.) Or an agency head who can simply pack up, head to Antartica, and lead an expedition, leaving her statutory responsibilities behind. Or how a special forces team can storm a facility, yet somehow fail to cover the back entrance, allowing the civilian targets to escape. [Spoiler alerts] Or how a presidential staffer can somehow order a nuclear attack without the knowledge of the president. Or how 12 submarines can be destroyed in their own crossfire when avoiding crossfire is tactics 101. Or the weird and unexplained deus et machina that resolves things at the end---like how the dolphin survives a nuclear blast.
When an anomaly on the floor of the Caribbean causes a US nuclear sub to abort its mission, naval technical investigator John Clay is assigned to the case. He encounters a team of marine biologists, under the leadership of Alison Shaw, who, with the aid of a powerful computer are on the verge of a scientific breakthrough; they have developed the ability to conduct two-way communication with earth’s second most intelligent species, dolphins.
Events take a strange turn when the experimental sub they use to check the sea floor is lost, and during the efforts to locate it, they meet Palin, a strange individual who is apparently able to travel via some unknown portal, and who claims to be from another planet.
This encounter leads to the discovery of a secret on the ocean floor that could spell the end of humanity on two planets, and it’s left to John and Alison to prevent a cataclysm of epic proportions. Breakthrough by Michael C. Grumley is a futuristic novel that, though positing science that does not yet exist, reads as though it could have been ripped from today’s headlines. The futuristic technology, and alien contact, though thrilling, pale beside the story of bureaucratic bumbling and political maneuvering that is so similar to things that happen in our present day.
As a bonus, the author, after wrapping up the story neatly, sets the stage for the next in the series. This is a ‘can’t put it down’ read.
I read a lot!!! There isn't a time when I don't have a book going. (I'm retired). Of course I have my favorite authors. Until 2 days ago I hadn't heard of Michael Grumley. A friend of mine sent me a text and told me to get my kindle and order Breakthrough. He said I wouldn't be disappointed. OMG!!! I couldn't put it down!!!! It was a little different than the books I usually read But I was NOT disappointed. I just ordered the 3 remaining books in the series. They are in my kindle and I'm starting Book 2 - Leap, as soon as I finish this review.
I will be honest... I didn't truly know quite what to expect with this book as I'd not read anything by this author before. Wow! I'm now THRILLED I got this amazing book. I was completely and utterly hooked within the first chapter. Imagine if you will, a dolphin aquarium... Same old same old right? WRONG!! Allison and her team of misfit scientists and a wonderful computer "white hat" hacker have done the impossible. Using a computer and a program specially designed, they used it to video and track their two in house dolphins extraordinaire... DIRK and SALLY 🐬🐬. Slowly this system has been tracking their clicks (sounds they make) in response to questions asked. The teams hope is this computer will help translate the dolohin language and make communication possible. With tons of data, Ali and her team know its possible...its just a matter of when. They're all workaholics, but after a very long day they force themselves to leave. Alison goes in early the next day to retrieve her notebook...about to leave, something catches her eye. EUREKA!! Three words are translated already! Calling the team in they are all very excited! Everything goes quickly from there. Fairly soon there are far more than three words! Considered a joke in her scientific community thanks to a past resesrch trial thst the Navy stole and delayed her getting back data for so long that nobody in her circles believed her...she has every right NOT to trust the Navy again. So imagine her shock and disdain when two Navy men come calling. John Clay and his friend Steve immediately know she seems to have an aversion to either the government, Navy, or both...they just dont know why. Yet they have a job to do. Their bosses wqnt to borrow her beloved dolphins to retrieve a lost rover on the ocean floor. There is something down there, and they need to get it. Suffice to say that from here on out there is oodles of action, dolphin talking to humans, shocking discoveries, immense politics, political backstabbing, and immense worry for the safety of the planet. Who would think two dolphins could be the ones to possibly save the day? So take the ride...meet Dirk, Sally and an amazing cast of characters. I for one got to the last page and just knew i had to read more. Luckily there are a few more books in this series to get to read! If you're a fan of James Rollins or Steve Berry I think you'll fall in love with this series...
I really liked this book, everything seemed to flow well and it really captured my imagination and at some points I never wanted to put it down as I wanted to see what would happen next. I am going to buy the next book now to see how the story continues. Amazing how good a book can be without profanity and sex.
